I also think that studying overseas is a great idea. This past summer I got the chance to tutor overseas in an American language school in Cairo, Egypt. Although my experience was not for college credit, it was undoubtedly the best experience of my college career.I believe that the amount of information I learned and the experience I gained while I was there tutoring was far more than any required class could teach me. I think more students should think about studying overseas because it really is a worthwhile experience.

Last year, I spent Christmas and New Years in China. I got to meet a few college kids, and they all spoke about their college experience in a similar way to mine. There were many universities to choose from, tuition was semi- affordable( much like here), and they all were going on interviews to secure jobs pre graduation. I got the feeling that their college experience was alot like ours. Then I heard a story one of the girls had told about a certain street through campus that women didnt walk down alone. Now, I dont know if this was true, but I dont see why she would be telling a lie. She clearly didnt feel comfortable being around that area of her campus. I know that there are areas that are not safe to be alone in, but I dont consider a main street through a college campus, in broad daylight to be one of them. Maybe it isnt so much that the education is better, maybe it is just that there are more freedoms to enjoy in the U S for college aged kids than there are in China.

I think it is incredible that students are going over seas. The draw back of our nations economy is that more and more people are choosing to not go to college because they are unable to afford it finacially. The good news, as stated in your article, is that students are able to get thier education out of the country for far less. What matters in the end is that US students are coming back with more knowledge than they left with and thats all that should matter to corporations. College is overrulled anyways and i believe that wherever you get your degree you should be qualified to work wherever.

Stephanie,
Great blog topic. There really is no need to pay people $61,000+ to sit on the DPS school board when they are already doing it part-time on what basically amounts to as a volunteer service. The school board members knew that it was basically an unpaid position when they accepted the job, if it is unpalatable to them then they should resign their position. It sounds to me as if Mr. Cushingberry is angling for a job on the board after his term as State Rep expires, either that or he's got a friend or relative on the board. :-0

Hmmm... Good thing that geriatric a-hole didn't get elected, we would all be taught by a General with one hand with 3 1/2 fingers and a shrapnel-damaged brain. Not to say that's a bad thing, just not exactly a qualification to be a public school teacher. I heard that you don't need a teaching degree to teach at a charter school, I heard that and wondered what I am doing here when I could be teaching social studies with a degree in communications. Yeah, ex-military shouldn't get automatic teaching positions. We work way to hard to get there, if all it takes is combat I might have done that.

Going back and reading your post i realize that i missed the topic of service men and women being able to march into the classroom. The good news is that i have it T-VO'D. I think it is absurd as well and it degrates everyone who has worked hard in college to obtain thier teaching certificate. I give 100% propts to the people that fight for this country. If it wasn't for them, i don't know where i would be or what the condition of the country would be. I would do anything to show the appreciation i have for these men and women. The one thing i find to be a sticky subject is being able to cheat the system because of their status in the armed forces. I know people are risking thier lives to be out in this war but i think that thier are qualified people to teach both in the armed forces and out and everyone needs to be givin a chance fairly to see who is best suitable for the job.

I believe, like the School Board President said, that the funds should go into the schools and not into the pockets of the members of the board. I also understand that people should get paid for thier services but to a certain extent. The members of the board new what they were getting into before they took the job. They obviously care about the city of Detroit and the schools that are included in the city. They would have not taken the job if they didn't like the pay in the first place. Until the city gets back on thier feet in terms of finacial and educational issue i think the topic is far-fetched. Maybe in the next ten years the bill might make sense. Good article.

Great post! Mandarin Chinese is becoming the new English and that has alot to do with China becoming a more economically powerful nation and they are showing their power. All we have to do is look at the Olympics this year. But, it is wonderful to have a choice of foreign languages and Chinese is a cool language to learn. I have a friend who speaks fluent Mandarin and it sounds so beautiful. I wonder how this is going to effect our teaching of English and the english language. Will more Chinese terms be incorporated into English? Will more Chinese language movies be in our theaters soon? I think for students this is an exciting time and the global economy has opened up many opportunities for students, teachers, and the US as a whole. Hey, does anyone know where I can study Mandarin?

That pisses me off too! WTF is McCain thinking? How is combat duty applicable to teaching English, Mathematics, or any other subject? Oh, I know....he is pandering for votes. No one wants to come out against our troops for any reason so that is probably why this flew under the radar. If Obama criticized this "plan", McCain and other politicians would paint Obama as "unpatriotic". Wrap yourself in the flag and its all good, right John? Unbelievable.

Unbelievable and harrowing experience for the teacher! This student should be expelled form the adult education program in Ferndale. If I was the teacher I would push for it, and if it didn't happen my resignation would shortly follow. This was an adult, not some 14 year-old kid trying to impress his or her friends or acting out. This guy needs to be made an example of, and by that I don't necessarily mean jail time or even being hospitalized (although the latter seems like a real possibility). What needs to happen is that this young man needs to be expelled permanently from the adult ed program. There needs to be consequences for this type of behavior.
